The Empty Analysis Table: The Real Picture of Vietnamese Chess Data

This morning I opened a technical analysis sheet for a national chess tournament in Vietnam. Every column showed N/A. There was no opening evaluation, no Elo rating, no head-to-head comparison, no form trend. At first I thought the software had failed. Then I realized the system was telling the truth: it had no data to judge how the players performed. Vietnam is not short of chess talent. Le Quang Liem became world blitz champion in 2026, a historic moment for the country. But a few champions cannot create a data ecosystem by themselves. Many national-team players, including female Grandmasters who have competed at the Chess Olympiad, remain scattered across newspaper articles and old tournament PDFs. Nobody has built a visible career map from their first tournament to their peak. A simple technical habit could change this. PGN is the standard text format for recording chess games. Once imported, a game can be analyzed, compared and stored in public databases. In Vietnam, many provincial youth tournaments still publish results as photos on social media. Photos tell us who won, but not why. I once watched a twelve-year-old sacrifice a rook and a knight in a beautiful attack. When I asked his coach whether the game would be saved, he looked surprised. The best game of the year would disappear by midnight. A young player who competes in about forty games annually will lose two hundred and forty games from his own record by the time he turns eighteen. That missing data prevents coaches from spotting recurring mistakes and prevents players from building an international profile. Female players face a double disadvantage: they have fewer international tournaments, and without data they cannot prove their progress to scouts, sponsors or academies. The empty table can be seen as an opportunity. Vietnam does not yet carry the heavy burden of digitizing millions of old games. It can build an open, modern data system from the start, without paying the huge cost that older chess powers now face. But this window will close quickly. If no action is taken over the next three years, the gap will turn into a wall. The solution is not expensive technology. It begins with referees exporting PGN files after each round, coaches creating folders for each student and clubs publishing results on free platforms such as Lichess. These are small actions, but together they become the foundation for the next generation. The empty table taught me that analytic tools are only as good as the culture in which they operate. Vietnamese chess is breathing steadily. It is waiting to be recorded.
